Launching new high quality public transport services for connecting the cities of 6 October and Sheikh Zayed with the Metro Network (to exert a shift from car use)
The much-awaited High Quality Bus Pilot Project is finally on its way to becoming a reality with The New Urban Communities Authority/Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities signing a Contract with the Egyptian Emirate Consortium on Monday to successfully roll out the public transport lines in the cities of 6 October and Sheikh Zayed, connecting with the Metro Network.
The Egyptian Emirate Consortium, including the Abu-Dhabi-based Emirates National Group and Egyptian company "Mowasalat Misr", won the bidding and handed in the letter of Intent on November 25, 2016. The Consortium, hence; will be in charge of the implementation, operation and maintenance of 7 HQB lines. The Consortium will supply 40 vehicles and be allowed to use the financial revenues coming from the operation of the bus lines and from utilization of the commercial facilities.
The pilot project has been designed by transportation and traffic planning experts from the Development Research & Technological Planning Center with the aim of reducing the growth of the energy consumption and the related greenhouse gas emissions of the transport sector in Egypt. The Pilot provides 7 new public bus lines to serve as an attractive public transport alternative to the private car, encouraging modal shift to such environmentally friendly and energy saving mode for daily travel. The new public bus lines will connect the cities of Sixth of October and Sheikh Zayed with the Metro Station at Cairo University, Giza Governorate and will start at the beginning of next year.
A Signature Ceremony took place in Cairo House on Monday 8 May 2017 in presence of three ministers: the Minister of Environment Dr. Khaled Fahmy, the Minister of Transport Dr. Hesham Arafat, and Giza Governor General Mohamed Kamal EL-Daly along with UNDP Country Director Randa Aboul-Hosn.The ceremony was opened by EEAA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mona Kamal and attended by representatives of Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development, EEAA, Street Engineering Experts and media.
Qulity of the bus service:
In order to achieve the objective of attracting private car users to shift to the bus, the high quality buses will be managed according to the latest smart operating systems, applied or the first time in Egypt. The 7 bus lines should offer high quality service including:
- Air conditioned and all seated buses (no standing passengers allowed)
- Clean comfortable seats
- Free internet connection to passenagers
- 3G Wi-Fi hot spot
